Principles to Action with Technology

A session on using technology to make students' mathematical thinking visible, moving beyond answer-only systems toward aggregate views of open work.

An original chalkboard-style illustration of a selected multiple-choice answer leading to a grid of varied geometry work samples.

Context

The presentation contrasts multiple-choice response systems with technology that lets teachers see a class's varied diagrams, calculations, and reasoning together.

The original deck was exported on April 7, 2017. Accompanying classroom recordings are intentionally not published to protect student privacy.

The central contrast in this session is between technology that records a selected answer and technology that makes mathematical work available for a teacher to study. The latter can surface different strategies, partial ideas, and the reasoning behind a result across an entire class.

Geometry tasks anchor the discussion because diagrams and annotations make those differences visible quickly. The goal is not simply to collect more student work, but to give teachers a practical way to notice it, choose what to discuss, and help students learn from one another.
